My name is Michael and I am a professional with years of experience working in the chemical dependency field. I am the Executive Director of a private residential substance abuse treatment center - and being in recovery myself - have a deep understanding of how serious a situation is when a loved one is addicted to and abusing drugs or alcohol.

The term crisis has been defined in many ways, but an actual crisis has essentially three parts. The definition reflecting these three is called the trilogy definition. The three aspects of a crisis are:
- A precipitating event occurs
- The preception of this event leads to subjective distress
- The usual coping methods fail, leading the person experiencing the event to function psychologically, emotionally, or behaviorally at a lower level than before the precipitating event occured.
